By the way, I only discovered the other day — and I should have guessed, knowing a smidgeon of the language — that the dessert called tiramisu was invented as a pick-me-up to wake and refresh the jaded palate after a stodgy meal. And that’s literally what tira mi su means in Italian: ‘pick me up’.
