In the last few days, a couple of people have asked me where the list of 1001 Children’s Books that I am attempting to read comes from. It comes from a book called 1001 Children’s Books You Must Read Before You Grow Up, published by Harper Collins, and it is part of the 1001 […] You Must Do Before You Die (‘before you die’ when talking about children’s books, is a bit morbid, so I understand why they altered the title for this book a bit). You can read about me finding the book and deciding to start reading them all here. However, through the wonders of the internet, someone has painstakingly written out the list, which I can copy and paste for you all to peruse at your leisure.
How many have you read? Which books have you always wanted to read but never gotten around to?

My fleshling owner claims to have read 144 of these titles, give or take a few for miscounting during reading the list…..
Good work! Which one do you reckon is your favourite?
Wow! Someone was very ambitious to type that out for all of us! And thank you for posting it for us to ponder. And since I am new to your blog, how many have you read since you started this quest? And how many still to go? Do you have a favorite? Have you encountered any that you didn’t care for?
I am currently at the 40 book mark (I know pitiful)… saying that, I’ve probably read between 250-300 titles over my lifetime, but I’m planning on revisiting each and every one of them so I can officially tick them off the list! You can see which books I’ve read from the list so far on the ‘Books I’ve read so far’ tab located in the top left hand corner of the blog, under the title.
It’s hard to pick a favourite, there are so many good ones! I loved ‘Tom’s Midnight Garden’, ‘The Secret Garden’, ‘The Iron Man’ and ‘One Hundred and One Dalmations’, but probably my favourite book that I only just discovered is ‘The Little White Horse’.
I must say I haven’t disliked that may books, most of them I thoroughly enjoyed, although I struggled a bit with ‘Redwall’ and ‘The Wizard of Earthsea’. However, I think my problem with ‘The Wizard of Earthsea’ was that I tried to read it too young, and didn’t understand it, and this sense of confusion and boredom tainted my reading of it as an adult.
How about you? What are some of your favourites from the list?
crikey I haven’t heard of that many of these. In fact I need to get my read on as once again I start to try and valiently (yet futilely) read everything that has ever been printed.
It’s a bit like that, isn’t it! If only people would stop publishing new books, and let us catch up! A lot of the books are unknown to me too, but I’ve enjoyed essentially all the books I’ve read so far, so there are sure to be a few gems that we have never heard of before hidden in the list!
I started to read a book once, the name escapes me which seemed to just be an angry guy ranting. He claimed there were no need for new books whilst there were so many great ones out there. Somehow he failed to see the irony of his own book. Still the fun is in the finding and i can’t wait to see what we each discover in the coming months.

So excited to find your blog and the list! I can claim to have read 170 of the books on the list- and would have read more but as a rebellious child refused to read ‘the classics’. Some of these books I have also read over 170 times each as they have been read many times and still are being read to my four children- Hairy Maclary, Slinky Malinki, Bear Hunt, Dear Zoo, Spot, Bath water’s hot, Hungry Caterpillar, Wild Things, and everything Pamela Allen amongst those.
Favourites: Shaun Tan’s The Arrival and Jennie Baker’s Window are ‘must own’ books for me. I love Oliver Jeffers and don’t own Lost and Found but just brought the sequel Up and Down on the weekend from Crow Books in Perth- my home away from home. I read and enjoyed all of Philip Pullman’s books a couple of years ago and just discovered Jackie French last year and working my way through those.
Other faves: Number the Stars, Winnie the Witch, The Changeover, The Haunting (anything Margaret Mahy in fact), Homecoming, Goodnight Mister Tom, Playing Beatie Bow, Under the Mountain (not my fave Maurice Gee book but he along with Mahy would be in my top ten YA authors). Neverending story- a million times better than the movie at least! I enjoyed The Dark is Rising sequence as a child. My Cat likes to Hide in boxes, The Giant Jam Sandwich, and all The Church Mouse books. Anything Roald Dahl. Marianne Dreams has stuck with me since childhood and I still vividly remember the exact location of the Rumer Godden’s books in my primary school library 28 years later- total fantasy for me to have such an amazing Doll’s House and dolls! Oh and the week I read The Little White Horse- staying with friends I created my own little cavern in a big cupboard over the wardrobe and devoured that book in particular- I think I was 12.
If I could add to the list I’d add: Take The Long Path by Joan DeHamel, The Runaway Settler’s By Elsie Locke (both New Zealanders) and Borgel by Daniel Manus Pinkwater (an American I was lucky to discover as I read my way through the children’s novels at the Dunedin Public Library one year long ago).
I’ve written a little about Children’s books here: http://www.seeshareremember.blogspot.com.au/search/label/childrens%20books and here: http://downtherightofway.blogspot.com.au/search/label/childrens%20books
I’ve printed the list off and will take it with me next week when we go to story time- in the meantime my 15 and 12 year old inform me that we already own a few on the list that I haven’t yet read… will be a welcome break for all the raising teenager stuff on my bedside table lately!
You’ve just reminded me how much I love children’s books and just how elated and excited they make me feel. I kind of take that for granted as I read them every day!
Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you!
Thank you so much gypsy for your lovely comment! I’m always interested in other people’s experiences with children’s books, especially ones that I am going to read as part of my list.
You’ve made me excited to read some of the books you mentioned, as your taste seems similar to mine – I love Philip Pullman, Goodnight Mister Tom and many of the picture books you mentioned. I hope that the list helps you discover some previously unknown gems – It sure did for me! Let me know how you go – which ones you love and which ones you love a bit less.
I’m interested in reading the books you would add to the list – there are a few on the list that I reckon are missing too!
Happy reading!
